The Department of Environmental Science, BUITEMS, in collaboration with the Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS), organized an intensive First Aid Training Session on August 22, 2025, at the Training Hall, BUITEMS, Takatu Campus.
The session was organized under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Anila Ali, Chairperson of the Department of Environmental Science, and brought together students and faculty members from the Faculty of Life Sciences, including the Departments of Biotechnology, Environmental Science, and Microbiology. Faculty teaching the course “Climate Change and Risk Management” also actively participated, linking the training to broader themes of preparedness, resilience, and disaster management.
Purpose of the Training
The training aimed to enhance the capacity of students and faculty to provide immediate assistance during medical emergencies, accidents, or disasters—critical moments where timely intervention can save lives and reduce injury severity. It emphasized that first aid is not only a vital life skill but also a crucial element of disaster risk management and community resilience.
Training Content and Practical Sessions
Delivered by experienced trainers from PRCS, the session combined theory with hands-on exercises. Key areas covered included:
• CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation): Life-saving resuscitation techniques for cardiac arrest victims.
• Wound Management: Proper cleaning, dressing, and bandaging methods.
• Fractures and Sprains: Splinting and immobilization techniques.
• Burns and Scalds: Immediate care and pain relief measures.
• Choking: Heimlich maneuver for adults and children.
• Bleeding Control: Direct pressure, elevation, and bandaging techniques.
• Shock Management: Recognizing symptoms and stabilizing patients.
Trainers also stressed the importance of preparedness, recommending that every home, office, and institution maintain a well-stocked first aid kit.
Linking Training with Climate Resilience
Faculty highlighted how the training directly complemented the Climate Change and Risk Management course, noting that climate-related disasters often lead to emergencies where first aid skills are essential for survival and community recovery.
Engagement and Outcomes
The session’s interactive format allowed students and faculty to actively participate in demonstrations and practice exercises, strengthening both their knowledge and confidence as future first responders.
Participants expressed appreciation for the initiative, recognizing it as more than an academic exercise—it was a life skill that fosters both individual responsibility and community resilience.
BUITEMS’ Commitment to Holistic Education
This initiative reflects BUITEMS’ mission to deliver quality education beyond the classroom, blending academic knowledge with practical training and social responsibility. By equipping its students and faculty with first aid skills, BUITEMS continues to nurture a culture of care, leadership, and resilience—empowering its community to serve society in times of need.
