BUITEMS Civil Engineering Students Gain Practical Hydrological Training During Educational Visit to Pakistan Meteorological Department

Quetta: Demonstrating its commitment to providing industry-oriented education and experiential learning opportunities, the Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, Balochistan University of Information Technology, Engineering and Management Sciences (BUITEMS) organized a one-day educational field visit to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), Quetta, for sixth-semester Civil Engineering students on 2 July 2026. The visit provided students with hands-on exposure to modern meteorological and hydrological monitoring systems, complementing their academic studies in Engineering Hydrology and related disciplines.
The field visit was organized under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Zafar Baloch, Chairperson of the Department of Civil Engineering, with Engr. Shahwali serving as the faculty coordinator. BUITEMS faculty members accompanied the students throughout the visit, while technical experts from the Pakistan Meteorological Department delivered comprehensive presentations and practical demonstrations on environmental monitoring systems, hydrological instrumentation, and meteorological data collection.
During the visit, students observed the operation of advanced meteorological equipment used for recording sunshine duration, evaporation, atmospheric pressure, and precipitation, alongside real-time seismological and tectonic monitoring systems. The practical sessions enabled students to understand how environmental and hydrological data are collected, analyzed, and utilized in engineering design, disaster preparedness, and infrastructure planning.
The field training also introduced students to calibration techniques, telemetry systems, environmental data logging, and risk assessment frameworks employed in professional engineering practice. PMD experts explained how meteorological observations and seismic monitoring contribute to flood forecasting, structural safety, urban planning, and disaster risk reduction. The interactive sessions strengthened students' analytical abilities and enhanced their understanding of the practical applications of engineering hydrology and environmental monitoring.
Speaking about the significance of such academic initiatives, the Department emphasized that practical exposure remains an essential component of engineering education. The collaboration between BUITEMS and the Pakistan Meteorological Department reflects the University's continued commitment to bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and professional practice while preparing graduates to address real-world engineering and environmental challenges.
The visit concluded with an interactive discussion and a group photograph, marking another successful academic engagement that enriched students' technical knowledge and reinforced BUITEMS' mission of producing competent, innovative, and industry-ready engineers through quality education and meaningful institutional partnerships.
