The Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, Balochistan University of Information Technology, Engineering and Management Sciences (BUITEMS), organized an industrial visit to the 132 kV Grid Station, Sheikhmanda Airport Road, Quetta, on September 26, 2025.
The visit aimed to provide students with practical exposure to the operation, functionality, and importance of high-voltage grid stations in the power transmission and distribution network.
The visit was supervised by Engr. Humayun Khan, Engr. Naseer Ahmad, Engr. Haris Shahbaz, and Engr. Muhammad Haris, and attended by students of the 7th semester, Department of Electrical Engineering.
During the visit, students explored key operational components of the grid station, including:
Power Transformers – for stepping down voltage from 132 kV to 11 kV
Circuit Breakers and Isolators – for system switching and protection
Current and Potential Transformers (CTs & PTs) – for monitoring and protection
Bus Bars and Control Panels – for load management and network reliability
The grid station staff provided a comprehensive briefing on power flow mechanisms, fault management, and the role of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems in monitoring and controlling electrical operations.
Through this visit, students gained:
A deeper understanding of power transmission and distribution systems
Practical knowledge of electrical protection devices and safety protocols
Exposure to real-time grid operations and system stability management
The visit successfully bridged the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world applications, enabling students to relate classroom learning to practical industry operations.
This initiative reflects BUITEMS’ commitment to experiential learning, industry linkage, and producing graduates equipped with both technical expertise and practical experience essential for Pakistan’s growing energy sector.
