Quetta, August 19, 2025 – The Department of Environmental Science, Faculty of Life Sciences & Informatics (FLSI), BUITEMS, successfully organized the Final Year Research Symposium and Poster Competition 2025 at the Sir Syed Block (Green Carpet & Pink Hall), BUITEMS, Quetta.
The event was dedicated to the memory of Mr. Aimal Zaib Kasi, a brilliant student and the highest academic achiever of his batch, whose legacy of academic excellence was fondly remembered throughout the program.
Research Showcasing Excellence
The symposium featured 15 research projects from graduating students, addressing critical issues such as:
• Occupational health and safety challenges for healthcare professionals and sanitary workers in Quetta.
• Institutional carbon footprints, including a case study of BUITEMS.
• Environmental impact assessments of housing schemes, Kuchlak Bypass, and waste-to-energy initiatives.
• Threats to biodiversity, including Markhors in the Takatu Mountain Range.
• Studies on air pollution, heavy metals, and groundwater contamination.
• Public awareness on plastic use and water quality assessments in Quetta and Nouhsar.
• Fluoride concentration in tea and its health implications.
Students presented their findings through poster exhibitions and oral discussions, evaluated by a distinguished panel of experts.
Intellectual Dialogue through Panel Discussions
Two engaging panel discussions enriched the symposium:
1. Environmental Pollution – moderated by Dr. Malik Akhtar, with contributions from Dr. Sunila Baksh, Dr. Afrasiab Tareen, and Dr. Najam Meghani.
2. Sustainable Development – moderated by Dr. Faiza Akhtar, featuring Mr. Mayen Khan, Dr. Zahoor, and Architect Naveed ur Rehman Anwar.
These sessions bridged student research with broader environmental and developmental challenges of Balochistan and Pakistan, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Closing Ceremony & Recognition
The closing ceremony featured encouraging remarks from Prof. Dr. M. Naeem Shahwani (Dean FLSI) and Prof. Dr. Kamran Sami (Director ORIC), who commended the innovation and resilience of the students.
Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Khalid Hafeez, highlighted the importance of final-year research as a defining academic milestone, praising the students for producing research with both local impact and global significance.
