Department of Plant Sciences & Informatics
Plants are fundamental to life on earth. From single-celled algae to the planet's largest living organism, they all contribute to our world's biodiversity and generate the oxygen, food, fibers, fuel and medicine that allow human life to exist. Plants produce, directly or indirectly, all of the food we eat, and with the growing world population, that fact is more important than ever. Three plant species - rice, wheat and maize - between them account for 80% of the world's food.

There are five ecological zones in Balochistan. All kind of plants ranging from tropical to deciduous are grown in the province. It is imperative to improve the sustainability in different agro-ecological zones by reversing the degradation of fragile ecologies. Balochistan is also a goldmine for medicinal plants. Millions of dollars can be earned if these medicinal plants are scientifically regenerated and produced on large scale. Balochistan is extremely deficient in water resources due to its arid and fragile environment. One of the solutions for the water scarcity is to produce and grow drought resistance plants.

Balochistan's agriculture sector is currently under-staffed in terms of scientific manpower in various disciplines of dry land farming, irrigated farming, forestry and range management.

Importance

The Department of Plant Sciences will provide students with the knowledge, skills and understanding critical for professional success in a changing world. Students will gain a firm understanding of the importance of plants in the world as well as the knowledge and tools to manipulate their genetics and biology. These students graduate with an acute understanding of people-plant interactions and the important role plants play in society. The department will be committed to effective and timely transfer of research-generated knowledge and technology to the agricultural industry and the larger scientific and public sectors to benefit the province, the nation and the world.

Objectives

  • To provide the students theoretical education necessary for continuing on for advanced degrees in plant related fields.
  • To enhance capacity-building and upgrading the skills of people through education and long-term training.
  • To enhance student's academic training and professional competitiveness in the field of Plant science.
  • To provide skillful manpower to the economy of the region.
  • To provide technology for self-employment in the province.
